The collection consists of letters and documents in the autograph of literary, political, social, artistic, naval, military, and legal celebrities, chiefly covering the period from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth.
The first 2,300 items bear numbers given in the National Galleries. Certain letters, etc., have been retained for exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery; the series is therefore not continuous (see MS.595).
Collection of state papers of the reigns of James VI and Charles I made by Sir James Balfour of Denmilne, Lord Lyon King of Arms.
The collection is known both as the `Denmilne State Papers` and the `Denmilne Collection`. Less formally it is often referred to as the `Denmilne Manuscripts`.

Early version of 'Etude for piano' by Roger Quilter, apparently in the composer's autograph.
Essay on female conduct, detailing the way in which a girl should conduct her life, composed by and apparently in the autograph of Alexander Monro, primus, probably in 1738 or 1739, in the form of letters to his daughter Margaret.
The sheets on which the 'letters' were written were inserted in a blank notebook as interleaves. Additional paragraphs, sentences, etc., were written in the margins of the interleaves, as well as on some of the original pages, on which is also written by the same hand an essay entitled, 'Of the Origine of Government and of the Right to the Supream Power applyed to the disputed Succession of the Crown of Britain' (folio 193).

The composer gives a history (folio xiii) of the work, which was composed in 1886-1887 and, in part, scored in 1888 (see dates on various folios). Some parts are incomplete.

An autograph manuscript of 'The Siege of Copenhagen' (folio 75) differs in several places from the printed text; there is also an autograph manuscript of Thomas Campbell's "The Soldier's Dream" (folio 10), and a copy of Charles Wolfe's 'The Burial of Sir John Moore' (folio 82).
'Life of Napolean Buonaparte' (Edinburgh, 1827), volumes i-iii, v, and ix (ii and ix being of the second edition), by Sir Walter Scott, with marginal corrections in the authors hand.
The corrections, which are numerous in volumes i and ii, less numerous in volumes iii, and few in volumes v and ix, are apparently different from those in the interleaved volumes that were used for the preparation of the Miscellaneous Prose Works edition of the ‘Life’ (see prefatory Advertisement thereto).

Manuscripts, chiefly autograph, and typescripts of the novel 'Kingisbyres or The end of an old song' by John Dick Scott, which was published as ‘The end of an old song’.
According to a note on MS.9913, folio i verso, part II was written in 1931, part IV in 1943, and parts I, III and V in 1947. The manuscript (MS.9913) is incomplete and does not entirely correlate with the typescript (MS.9914). For example part V, chapter 1 of the typescript is different from the manuscript version, and the latter half of part III, chapter 6 is missing from the manuscript version and is included in the typescript version as part II, chapter 6.
